Apple enters tablet market with iPad

Apple has finally taken the wraps off the iPad, its entrance into the tablet market, ending months of waiting for the vendor's next technology development.

The first mentions of an Apple tablet PC surfaced last year with various names suggested including the iFlat and iSlate but in the end the iPad was unveiled this evening by Steve Jobs.

In terms of the stats the iPad is 0.5 inches thick, weighs 1.5 pounds, has a 9.7 inch multitouch display, a 1GHz Apple A4 chip under the hood and can offer between 16GB and 64GB of flash memory.

Jobs said that it had also developed a 10 hour battery life and the device would of course come armed with a host of apps, which had helped to make the iPod Touch and iPhone such a success.

"We think it's going to be a whole other gold rush for developers," said Jobs.

The media industry will be watching with interest with newspaper magnate Rupert Murdoch hoping he can charge for access to digital content via the device and a host of book publishers hoping for similar success with Apple's iBooks offering.

Jobs was joined at the launch by an executive from Electronics Arts who underlined the gaming possibilities of the iPad.
