Researchers at global IT advisory consultancy Ovum have been discussing their impressions of the coming 12 months in the IT services business, and as expected the recession is looming large.

Given the worsening global economy, Ovum believes that quality assurance and increased focus on information security will be issues to watch during 2009. As demand for improved value and ROI grows, pressure will mount on developers and outsourcers to “raise the twin bars” of quality assurance, ensuring products and services are fit for purpose and getting the implementation right first time.

Ovum also focused on disruptive technological models such as cloud computing, which has steadily gained in prominence over 2008. The cloud, Ovum claims, is on track to become one of the most competitive areas of the industry, and its cost-saving benefits mean the recession will drive more customers to start asking questions about it.

Providers will also have to deal with growing demands for efficient usage of resources, both human and otherwise. Ovum said: “[This]means a focus on disciplines such as ITIL and a drive to improve infrastructure maturity – to standardise, consolidate and rationalise IT infrastructure and processes.” The green IT agenda will remain important during 2009, although it may well take second place to cost concerns.

IT Services practice team leader Eamonn Kennedy said: “IT services providers will need to navigate a host of new and continuing challenges as they attempt to maintain and grow their business.”

He added: “Providers must get ahead of these trends as they work to capture new customers and keep the ones they have.”
