Lenovo has followed in the footsteps of its competitors and set up a web store to sell direct to the home based office market and smaller SMEs.
The web store will offer users the choice of configuring their hardware and the vendor is also extending that option to channel partners.
Neil Berville, SMB business, consumer business and director of transactional business for the UK and Ireland at Lenovo, said that the service would not be a competitor to the channel because it did not currently operate at that end of the market.
"People have a desire to go and buy from a vendor [direct over the web] and we can't compete in that market," he said.
He added that it had set down clear policies to ensure it did not cannibalise channel sales and any customer ordering five units or above online would be redirected to a reseller.
"We will be sensible and have robust ethics around what the direct business is about," he said.
Lenovo has been running web sales in the US and Australia and Berville said that according to analysts the UK market was around 16% and it aimed to take the same share of that business it held in the rest of the British market.
