Symantec reveals extent of botnet and spam links

The link between bots and spam is growing and increasing the pressure on ISPs to provide a stable infrastructure and to keep their services secure.

The threat of ISPs being suspended is not an exaggerated one with the latest Symantec Q3 2009 MessageLabs Intelligence report indicating that the volume of automated spam is reaching record levels.

“Over the past year, we have seen a number of ISPs taken offline for hosting bot net activity resulting in a case of sink or swim and an ensuing shift in botnet power, said Paul Wood, MessageLabs intelligence senior analyst at Symantec.

Part of the problem has been the changing nature of the technology and the security vendor identified emerging botnets that were now responsible for 80% plus of spam dissemination.
