The costs of the worst snowfalls for two decades is running into billions for small companies as workers stay at home and customers are kept away by the treacherous conditions.

The Federation of Small Businesses estimates that 1 in 5 of the workforce, 6.4m people, did not get into work yesterday and that figures could be reflected again today as the weather problems move from the South to the North.

The costs of those staff staying away is put at £1bn but there have been warnings this morning that as the snow sweeps north that figure could rise to close to £3bn.

Some in the channel virtually shut up shop yesterday with others that had made it into work heading home early to avoid problems on the roads.

Even though the snow has stopped falling in the South East the icy conditions have meant that for many today will also be disrupted by the weather.
