Repair specialist the Comtek Group has slammed a culture inthe networking industry that dissuades users from patching up kitcausing them to spend money to buy equipment that need not be purchased.
Speaking to MicroScope Comtek CEO Askar Sheibani expressedhis frustration that short warranties and snobbery about repairs combined topush hard pressed customers down the route of making additional purchases.
“We are trying to change the throw-away culture in theindustry it is no longer sustainable,” he said.
“The recession has speeded up this customer change and therehuge opportunities [for those skilled in repairing IT equipment] and morepeople are using us now,” he added.
Comtek has issued extended warranties on the networking andcomms equipment it repairs.
Keith Humphries, managing consultant at EuroLan, said thatpromoting the options of repairs would appeal in the recession and to thoselooking at their corporate social responsibility agendas but warned that therewere costs involved with shipping kit around for repair.
