Websense has moved away from its software roots with thelaunch of an appliance that is aimed at tapping into the demand for hardwarethat can help counter web and email based threats.

With the launch of the V100000 secure gateway web appliancethe vendor is now able to offer a platform to users that is designed to fend offproblems with web 2.0 sites processing and scanning information at the rate of256MB per second.

Eoin Farrer, director of web security sales at Websense, said that it had decided to launch an appliance based on customer feedback andits own strategic plan to widen its market.

“There are some customers that prefer the appliance formfactor and it takes a different approach using it as a platform as well as a dedicatedweb proxy switch,” he said.

He added that the product, which launches at the end of thismonth, was aimed at the mid market where it expected users would find that theyhad enough seats to make the product attractive.

Farrer said that it initially expected to attract existingcustomers but it would also be competing against existing appliance vendors.

He added that most of its resellers had experience with appliances so it did not anticpate a large amount of problems for partners to add the product to their line-ups.
