The Digital Britain report is to be investigated by across-party committee in the wake of its launch on 16 June in order to assessif its recommendations are realistic and valid.

Among other things the report promised to provide universalbroadband access at a speed of 2Mb/s by 2012, and controversially imposed a £6per annum levy on copper phone lines in order to fund its plans.

The Business and Enterprise Committee will look into both ofthese aspects of the report, in addition to assessing whether or not ISPs areproviding broadband speeds as advertised, and the extent to which currentregulation strikes the right balance between ensuring fair competition andencouraging investment in next generation networks.

Earlier today, Gordon Brown announced plans for a DigitalBritain Bill in the Draft Queen’s Speech, which will form the legislative bedrockfor the plan.
