BT Engage IT bags new boss

BT has named former Redstone boss Martin Balaam as the man to head up its reseller operation Engage IT.

As revealed by MicroScope, managing director Nick Gorringe left BT Engage IT at the last month, after 16 years at the firm but will continue to act as an advisor to the business.

"BT is pleased to announce the appointment of Martin Balaam as managing director, BT Engage IT with immediate effect. Martin joins from Redstone plc where he was group CEO since 2005," said John Dovey, director of ICT at BT.

Balaam had been CEO at network integrator Xprt Group which was subsequently sold to Redstone but he left the troubled firm in April 2009 by mutual consent, and was replaced by Alan Coppin, who incidentally exited the company last week.

Sources said Balaam had failed to integrate the numerous acquisitions Redstone had made over the years and since posting unflattering financial results the integrator has been aggressively cutting costs, a programme that has fallen behind schedule.

The break up of the firm began when Daisy Communications picked up Redstone's telecoms business in the summer and it received a preliminary approach from a potential buyer last month that has so far failed to advance.

It also secured £6m financing weeks ago to revise some of its debt repayment schedules and secure its future, for the short term at least.
