HP will build its desktop portfolio as part of an assault on the Electronic Point Of Sale (EPOS) retail market and is profiling the channel for specialists.
According to Paul Hunter, channel sales director for HP's personal systems group - who started a career in IT at EPOS specialist NCR - said its RP5700 line was relevant to that sector at present.
"It's a market space where we have no market share, we conceive it to be adjacent to some of the technology that we have got at the moment...we are going to build that out," he told MicroScope.
He said the plan was for HP to work with specialist partners
"We are in the process of doing the work to see what the profile of the partner looks like and what the compensation model looks like but we think it is an opportunity," revealed Hunter.
Ranjit Atwal, principal analyst at Gartner, said EPOS devices sold to retailers were generally less specialist and overlapped with general workstations but the margins were relatively higher than the mainstream PC products.
