HP grabs VP to boost managed print services sales

Hewlett-Packard has moved to shore up its enterprise printing and services business across EMEA by recruiting veteran Marko Tarkiainen.

In the past two decades the Finn has held various positions at country and regional level with Sharp, Xerox and Lexmark, where most recently he was general manager for enterprise sales EMEA.

Tarkiainen joins HP as the Imaging and Printing Group's vice president for enterprise sales of the Managed Enterprise Solutions (MES), reporting to the business unit's boss Arnold Marty.

"We are delighted with the appointment of a proven industry leader to drive our sales efforts in the region," said Marty in a statement.

Gartner figures revealed that sales of traditional printers and MFPs declined 17.8% in 2009, as the recession forced customers to sweat their assets and seek ways of reducing costs, which drove up interest in managed print services.

It has again been forecast that demand for the peripheral hardware devices will remain relatively sluggish but the positive trend in managed print services (MPS) is expected to continue.

Former Gartner principal analyst Malcolm Hancock, who last year started up print consultancy Bradham 360, said the big initiative among the major vendors was "pushing MPS through the channel".
