Gateway has vowed to have at least one server and storage distributor in place by the end of this quarter to hit the ground running in 2011, which could be wishful thinking given the lengthy process to date.
Back in April, Gateway - Acer's business brand in Europe - revealed it was close to signing up several distributors in the UK to take its infrastructure products to market but months later there has been no appointment.
Kevin O'Donoghue, director at Gateway EMEA, admitted the situation had taken longer than expected to rectify but refused to detail any previous issues or discussions.
"We hope to get something formalised with a distributor in the UK before the end of the year," he told MicroScope.
According to channel sources, Gateway had talking with Northamber but the deal fell by the wayside and advanced talks with Bell Microproducts were scuppered by the acquisition by Avnet.
Henry Matthews, managing director at Northamber, said it had decided against distributing Gateway in the competitive server space.
"Gateway will find it very hard to penetrate the market with the likes of HP, Dell, Fujitsu et al," he said.
Currently, Computer 2000 sells Gateway clients but local management at the vendor led by UK country head Nathan Knight have been trying to recruit resellers to get ready for the long awaited push into the infrastructure space.
O'Donoghue said its strategy had resonated with mid-market dealers. "People like the model," he said, "Gateway is a professional only brand with no price list and we work 100% through the dealer channel."
