Computer 2000's efforts to find a permanent general manager for its PC division received a minor set back over the festive period as Phil Brown, who was expected to take the role, decided to join Micro P.

Late last year, MicroScope revealed that Brown, sales director at ASUS, looked set to return to C2000 to fill the PC GM position left vacant by Mark Glasspool in September.

Brown confirmed that from 1 February he is to become commercial director at Micro P's Basingstoke office, saying: "It was the right opportunity for me."

Brown returns to distribution after a four year break. He left C2000 in 2006 after more than three years as notebook business manager to head up Samsung's notebook division before becoming ASUS' sales director in 2010.

"I built the team and put a solid structure in place [at ASUS] but it was not the right job for me," he said.

Netbook pioneer ASUS set Brown the task of propelling it to a top three spot in the UK by more heavily pushing the classic desktop and notebook kit but Gartner analyst Ranjit Atwal described its performance as "quite erratic".

"ASUS has a reliance on the netbook and that market has dipped rapidly over the last few quarters ... it has not been able to replace those volumes with mainstream PC sales. The market is tough and competition intense," he said.

C2000's hunt for a new GM continues, according to group marketing director Andy Dow, who is running the PC unit for the time being.

"It's business as usual," he told MicroScope.
