Avnet hires and fires staff as Bell integration nears end

Avnet Technology Solutions has confirmed the loss of 40 jobs, largely from Bell Microproducts' former headquarters in Chessington but added it is hiring to cover new vendor signings and a European accounts payable hub launching in Bracknell.

The move is part of Avnet's integration of Bell as it prepares to exit the Surrey-based premises and move staff to Bracknell, as previously revealed. A small number of cuts will also be made at the Haslingdon office.

"The facts are that we've got around 40 people leaving the business during January and early February, predominantly back office functions, finance and order processing," said John Toal, UK country manager at Avnet TS.

"The majority are in Chessington," he added, "its all around duplication".

The lease on the Surrey-based office is understood to run out by the end of April but Toal said it had not cemented an exit date, "it's a plan we are working on".

He insisted that other than normal attrition there was no reduction to the sales and marketing teams.

"On the upside it is worth noting that we have currently got around 70 vacancies in the UK because we have decided as an organisation to create a Centre of Excellence for the account payable function," claimed Toal.

As a result of the centralisation, Avnet TS will hire around 35 staff for this Bracknell-based team to be headed up by Yemi Adeleye, account payable manager EMEA, with the UK and Nordics operations already up and running.

"There are also other jobs being created in support of the new vendor signings like our increased business with Avaya and others are that are coming on board, so we are also taking people on as well as losing people," said Toal.
