Samsung restarts search for mobile PC GM

Samsung is on the lookout for a general manager to run its mobile PC unit after handing current incumbent Darren Matthews a newly created role to manage B2B resellers in the division.

At the same time, the Korean giant is preparing to welcome on board Toshiba distribution boss Mark Reynolds to head up wholesalers in its displays operation run by Phil Gaut.

Graham Long, Samsung UK and Ireland vice president of the IT business, confirmed the search for a new mobile PC GM but downplayed industry talk that Matthews next position will be a lesser role.

"This should demonstrate the importance of B2B, we've taken someone that is very senior and moved them into that specific role....Darren wanted a new challenge," he said.

Matthews only became GM of the mobile PC business last year following the departure of Phil Brown, who joined ASUS as sales director and more recently moved to Micro P as commercial director.

The renewed sales effort in B2B PCs is made all the more important in the current climate after the consumer market continued to falter in Q3 and Q4 and is forecast to limp along for the next four years.

IDC numbers show that Samsung was ranked seventh in the UK PC market in Q4, and fifth in the notebook segment as sales fell 26% to 180,000 units, however, faltering demand for netbooks accounted for the lion share of the drop.

For the whole of last year, Samsung shipped 727,000 mobile PCs in the UK, up 15% on 2009 in a market that grew just 3%.

In other developments, Reynolds - who is on gardening leave from notebook vendor Toshiba - is joining Samsung next month as distribution boss for displays, replacing Mark Keller, reporting to Gaut.

Dion Smith, GM for print, continues to work with print distribution boss Mark Porter, while Annika Fagerstrom, who joined from HP last September, runs logistics partners for the PC unit and will report to Matthews until a successor is found.
