Network specialist NHR calls for new approach to end-of-life kit

Network maintenance and refurbished Cisco kit specialist Network Hardware Resale (NHR) has called for the channel to consider new approaches to dealing with end-of-life and pre-owned kit, saying that vendors need to begin to adapt their business models to take account of growing awareness of the cost and environmental issues surrounding ageing hardware.

Speaking to MicroScope, NHR general manager of international, Glenn Fassett, said the reseller channel was developing "greater awareness and appreciation of lifecycle management" and pointed to moves from distributors such as Avnet to build reverse logistics into their models as evidence that NHR is on the right track.

"It is pushing this message over the tipping point in terms of how customers think about their IT supply chains," he said.

However, Fassett said, there is still work to be done in persuading the vendor community to ditch old models of thinking and embrace refurbishment and recycling.

US-based NHR, which boasts turnover of approximately $250m (£155m) per annum, has just expanded its NetSure maintenance programme to include a four hour hardware replacement guarantee in 120 major metropolitan areas worldwide, which it says will help customers protect more effectively against network downtime.

Using its own network of certified Cisco engineers it claims the NHR programme can provide support for hardware that the vendor will no longer touch, making it "a great alternative to SMARTnet in the SMB space, particularly for edge and access layers," according to Fassett.

The firm is also offering NetSure as a white-label offering to Cisco resellers, which could help them keep in contact with customers that are unwilling to fork out for new gear, as well as offering a recurring revenue stream, said Fassett.

NHR also deals with rival network vendors including Brocade, Dell-Force 10, Extreme and Juniper, and Fassett said that the company envisioned its own future as evolving to offer support on servers and storage hardware as well.
