The two companies, which stressed that they will remain competitors until the deal closes, have put their faith in the popular stalwarts of open standards and interoperability.
After the acquisition closes, Cisco plans to begin work on an open architecture to foster greater interoperability between Tandberg and third-party systems.
Both Cisco and Tandberg video product lines will be united under a Cisco TelePresence Technology Group, which will have responsibility for product groups such as Immersive TelePresence, bringing together Cisco's TelePresence System 3000 and Tandberg's Total Telepresence, and Multipurpose Room Systems which will marry Tandberg's Profile series and Cisco's TelePresence System 1300.
Also included are Personal Systems, Platform Portfolio - composed of Tandberg's C-Series, MXP codecs, set-top systems and cameras - as well as Infrastructure and TelePresence-As-A-Service products.
The commitment to open standards should go down well with the pair's respective channels. Tandberg resellers have previously told MicroScope that the mid-market video specialist had always been known for reliable, open standards, and hoped that Cisco would not change that.
On the channel front, Cisco said that Tandberg's channels organisation will become a specialist sales team within Cisco, which it hopes will guarantee continuity for resellers.
Cisco first moved to acquire Tandberg last autumn, but initially it seemed as if hostile Tandberg shareholders might scupper the bid, forcing Cisco to sweeten the pot to the tune of several hundred million dollars.
