Virtualisation skills gap could hold SMEs back

Virtualisation skills gap could hold SMEs back

SMEs face missing out on virtualisation because of a lack of skills with vendors failing to fill the knowledge gap.

That warning has been sounded by a reseller at the chalk face providing small companies with virtualisation advice.

Virtualisation has become one of the main technologies targeted at all sizes of company looking to make cost and efficiency savings but there are fears that on the ground the lack of understanding is holding things back.

"The technology has become more affordable and is now available in the lower cost infrastructures rather than simply high end networking as used to be the case.  But virtualising your data centre to get maximum benefit requires a specific set of skills because it's pretty complicated stuff," said Andy Holding, a network consultant at Leeds-based SICL.

"It can prove very hard for organisations to buy in those skills unless they're large and have a direct relationship with Cisco for example," he added.
