Huawei mulls potential Motorola bid

Alex Scroxton
Shot down in 2008 in an attempt to link up with 3Com, Chinese networking vendor Huawei is now reportedly eyeing up Motorola's network business as the venerable US-based tech firm prepares to break up early next year.

Earlier in the week Motorola restated its 2009 financial results to take account of the impending split, which will see it become four separate businesses in; Mobile Devices, Home, Enterprise Mobility Solutions and Networks.

Citing unknown sources, the Financial Times has subsequently reported that Huawei is in talks with the US government to assuage fears over one of the country's largest tech concerns being acquired by a Chinese firm

Similar fears scuppered the 3Com acquisition after Huawei was linked to the Chinese military. Although its founder did at one time serve in the People's Liberation Army, Huawei has always strenuously denied this accusation.
