Tesco steps up fight in electrical retail market

The imminent opening of US retail giant Best Buy's furst retail stores in the UK has sparked a reaction from Tesco.

Although the most obvious competitors for Best Buy will be DSGi and the likes of Comet the importance of electrical sales has been indicated with the decision by Tesco to take on 1,000 technical staff,

Best Buy is opening up its Lakeside store in Thurrock on 30 April, earlier than originally planned, with a four-day launch festival that that takes advantage of the bank holiday.

In a statement accompanying its preliminary results Tesco said that electricals were a growing part of its UK business and it was "rapidly growing" its presence in the market.

"[With] 1,000 Tesco Tech Support advisors in our stores to help customers make the choice, we are rapidly growing our presence in the electricals market," Tesco stated.

"Our sales in electricals have doubled in the last four years and around 20% are now online," the retailer added.
