Sunbelt Software is aiming to exploit potential problems its rival McAfee might be having after it emerged that an anti-virus update the vendor sent out caused major headaches for XP users.
McAfee released an update yesterday that had an impact on a quarantined Windows systems file and made life extremely difficult for users of XP.
McAfee acknowledged there was a problem in a statement but stressed that it had resolved the issue quickly and it had impacted only a fraction of its customer base.
"McAfee is aware that a number of customers have incurred a false positive error due to this release. We believe that this incident has impacted less than one half of one percent of our enterprise accounts globally," the company stated.
Recognising an opportunity to steam in and provide customers with an alternative Sunbelt is dangling a carrot in front of enterprise users of six months free maintenance on orders placed before the end of June.
The vendor is also making transition tools available to make it easier for customers to move from one platform to the other.
The Sunbelt initiative is not a unique marketing approach and vendors are increasingly reacting to problems encountered by rivals in a much quicker fashion.
