Sales of Windows 7 hit the 100m mark

The words 'Vista' and 'OS disappointment' need never be uttered in Microsoft offices again after the sales of Windows 7 hit the 100m unit mark.

The speed with which Windows 7 has sold has made it the fastest selling OS from the vendor ever, and shown that the momentum that surrounded the launch back on 22 October has continued.

Throughout the build up to the arrival of Windows 7 there were numerous references to the experience the channel went through with Vista, where expectations of success failed to materialise and users held onto XP.

But this time around Microsoft made it quite clear that holding onto XP was not an option as it was going to hit the end of life buffers and users seem to have been prepared to upgrade.

"Exactly 6 months after the launch on October 22 2009, we've sold well over 100 million licenses of Windows 7. To put that in context, more than 10% of all PCs worldwide are already running Windows 7 today," wrote one member of the Windows 7 blogging team on the vendor's OS blog.
