Alcatel-Lucent and BT have signed a five-year deal to expedite the provision of next-generation network services across BT's 21CN (21st Century Network) project.

BT said Alcatel-Lucent's High Leverage Network architecture and transformational services will allow it to increase network capacity as it prepares to introduce new video services to wholesale and retail subscribers.

It claimed that with video-rich content booming, the need to transition to higher quality networks to support this trend has become an imperative.

"21CN is a huge transformational programme. It's about providing a network for the future which requires a game-changing approach," explained BT 21CN Core Convergence managing director George Nazi.

Under the terms of the deal Alcatel-Lucent will provide an integrated IP and optical transport solution alongside a services line-up that includes project management, design, installation and commissioning, repair and return and software updates, which it said would help BT manage spiralling levels of traffic while bringing down its own costs.
