Cisco to get aggressive in consumer space

Cisco is claiming it has crossed a chasm when it comes to its nascent consumer strategy, and CEO John Chambers has vowed to "skill up" around the consumer business, adding "we're going to be very aggressive here."
Earlier in 2009 Cisco acquired Pure Digital, makers of the idiot-proof Flip video camera, as the latest addition to a growing consumer line-up that includes Linksys and set-top box builder Scientific Atlanta.
Cisco has made video and its applications in the Web 2.0 world a key focus of its 2009 Partner Summit, which closed yesterday evening, handing out Flip cameras to partners and encouraging them to participate in a Twitter-style social media project.
"Was Flip a consumer acquisition? You bet. Was it an enterprise acquisition? Oh yeah. Service provider? Yeah. Is it a standalone device? No way," said Chambers, who believes the barriers between consumer and enterprise IT will continue to drop.
Chambers told MicroScope it would be "interesting" to see how, and indeed if, Cisco business partners would follow the vendor on its consumer journey, but offered up no clues as to how he would implement the new strategy.
One Gold partner confided it was "unlikely" that many Cisco partners would branch out at this stage.
