The Business Secretary Vince Cable is setting out to cut red tape and reduce expensive legislation that is planned to be implemented but has yet to take effect.
As part of the general government determination to cut costs wherever possible Cable is casting an eye over a number of measures that are not yet implemented including elements of the Equalities Bill.
But any reduction in red tape would meet the wishes of channel players that voiced fears over the mounting burden of bureaucracy at the start of the election process.
The government has already set out its ambitions to cut £6bn from the deficit this year and the measures that Cable might scrap could produce savings of up to £19bn.
"The deluge of new regulations has been choking off enterprise for too long. We must move away from the view that the only way to solve problems is to regulate," said Cable.
"This is a real challenge and it will not be easy. We need to reduce regulation and at the same time meet our social and environmental ambitions. This demands a radical change in culture away from the tick box approach to regulation only as a last resort. It's a big task but one worth striving for," he added.
