Security appliance market returns to growth

The security appliance market has returned to growth after being hit hard in the recession managing to climb back into a positive position for the first time since the first quarter of last year.

Although the security market came through the worst of the recession largely unscathed the appliance market, which includes primarily UTM devices, was hit as customers delayed spending.

But according to the latest IDC figures the latest figures tracking the market segment across Western Europe show signs of improvement.

"This quarter shows the first positive growth in the total security appliance market since 1Q09," said Romain Fouchereau, research analyst at IDC.

"The resumed positive growth this quarter derived solely from the two largest segments, UTM and content management appliances, whereas the other security appliance functions still reported disappointing results," he added.

The firewall market continued to decline with a 20.2% decrease over the same quarter a year before with maturity being blamed for a slowing in that market segment.

The UTM option has also impacted the low-end of the firewall market with customers choosing an appliance rather than a standalone product.

Intrusion prevention also saw a drop of 29.7% year on year hit by delayed customer spending and the VPN market also saw a decline of 16.6% compared to Q1 2009.

But UTM and content management grew, 14.3% and 42.4% respectively, indicating that there is some spending that users have not delayed because of the downturn.

In terms of vendors Cisco remained at the top of the pile in the content management appliance space with McAfee heading the market in web security and messaging.

Juniper took the top spot in the UTM market ahead of Fortinet, which lost its leading position for the first time in two years.
