Many enterprises are not protecting themselves against cyber attack thoroughly enough despite the increased awareness of the potential risks.
According to research from HP firms across Europe and the US have not done enough to prevent web based attacks getting through their defences with more than a thirds of European businesses admitting they have been hit by a nation-state attack.
The most obvious case is the Google complaint that they were targeted by China and as a result revised their plans for the country.
The HP research indicated that despite the risks security investment isn't being increased by that many and 53% admit that the current spending is not enough to curtail attacks.
"Organizations recognize that the threat and impact of cyber crime is significant, and while they recognize the need to be 'Cyber Ready' today's research reveals that less than half the organizations are sufficiently prepared to combat a cyber attack," said Dan Turner, HP security leader, HP Enterprise Services.
"HP recognises that businesses and governments need to balance transparency and confidentiality to meet this new age of cybersecurity and therefore HP has used the research to develop a tool to help our clients assess their own level of Cyber Readiness," he added.
