Despite her high profile experience running Hewlett-Packard and her connections at senior levels of the Republican party former HP CEO Carly Fiorina lost out on gaining a Senate seat last night.

The former HP boss has turned her back on he IT industry setting her sights on political office and had been gunning for a senate seat in California in the mid-term elections in the US.

But, despite spending millions, Fiorina was unable to unseat her Democratic rival Barbara Boxer, who declared victory a couple of hours ago.

The other contender with a Silicon Valley background, Meg Whitman, former head honcho at eBay, lost out on her bid to become Californian Governor, seeing her reported spending of $142m unable to secure a victory.

Both women had said in their campaigns that they would use the business acumen they had picked up running IT firms in their roles as political leaders.
