Research: Resellers show caution towards cloud hype

Simon Quicke

The cloud is going to grow over the next few years but it's impact on resellers is not going to be as dramatic as some hosted enthusiasts might have thought.

According to research from MicroScope in association with IBM resellers are divided over the impact of cloud in the next five years.

There were 29% of resellers prepared to predict that the cloud would have a significant impact on their business in the next five years bit 10% dismissed it as not having any major influence on their operations.

Clearly there is still a way to go before the cloud takes even a majority stake in the software market but vendors have been consistently warning that it is growing quickly and the channel needs to take a stance on the technology sooner rather than later.

Speaking to MicroScope about the findings, Jacqui Davey, vice-president of the business partner organisation and mid-market UK and Ireland at IBM, said that the cloud stats showed that it was taking time to filter down to the coalface.

"Cloud is an area all the analysts are highlighting as a very strong growth area but even over the next five years it is going to be less than 10% of IT spend, even though there will be phenomenal growth from a small base," she said.
