Keeping netyworks ticking over and maintaining uptime and availability will remain the biggest concerns for corporate customers during 2011, according to research conducted on behalf of Ipswitch's Network Management Division.

A survey of 100,000 customers found that a quarter of repondents said maintaining network uptime was their top concern, with managing bandwidth utilisation garnering just under 24% of the vote.

Respondents also said identifying the entire IT estate and managing infrastructure changes were key priorities, while 8% saw no new challenges for the 12 months ahead.

But few respondents, just over 13%, said that monitoring virtualised environments and cloud applications was on their mind, which Ipswitch said hinted that the proliferation of cloud solutions has some way to go.

Ipswitch Network Management Division president Ennio Carboni said that the trend towards uptime and bandwidth was indicative of the growth of video and similar applications in the business world.

"As the use of bandwidth-intensive applications increases, so does the danger that bandwidth utilisation will exceed maximum levels. This amplifies the need to effectively monitor the corporate network," he said.
