The consolidation that has been a feature of the recession could provide headaches for those trying to keep an eye on software licences.
With software audits on the rise and the financial risks involved with being caught highlighted regularly with large settlements with the Business Software Alliance (BSA) those involved with helping customers keep on the right side of compliance regulations have raised the alarm.
At a recent round table held by FAST Ltd the main threat to firms was the incremental nature of consolidation and the impact it might have on compliance, with many opting not to refer to resellers or vendors for help.
"We will continue to see customers making tactical decisions rather than strategic ones. We're finding that a lot of our customers are not working with their vendors in a strategic manner, making short term 'what's needed, now type decisions," said Ian Moyse, EMEA channel director at Webroot Software.
One of the ways resellers could help customers was to establish what the IT assets were and then help them manage the software to control costs.
"Software Asset Management and license management come down to fundamentals of knowing what you've got, knowing what business needs, the business objectives, and managing that effectively," said Phil Heap, head of products and services at FAST Ltd.
