It has emerged that EMC partner Dell will not be getting access to its SMB VNXe unified storage packages, which were launched yesterday.

Yesterday evening US press reported that EMC CEO Joe Tucci said: "In this product line there is no Dell partnership. They will not resell this product."

In a statement sent to MicroScope, EMC confirmed the move.

"VNXe and the broader VNX family will be offered primarily through EMC Velocity partners, and there are no plans for Dell to sell VNX systems at this time," it said.

Dell has been reselling low-end EMC gear since 2001, but speculation over the future of Dell's long-running relationship with EMC has been rife ever since Dell started making eyes at EqualLogic.

In 2009, as reported by MicroScope, Tucci said that the pair were paring back their reseller relationship to focus more on the OEM business.

EMC's nose was put further out of joint after Dell got itself into a bidding war with HP over 3Par last autumn, and although the two later held reconciliatory talks over the issue, yesterday's launch confirms in no uncertain terms the breach between the two firms.

Indeed, the sub-$10,000 starting price on the new range puts VNXe firmly in competition with Dell's own offerings in the SMB space.

Softcat solutions director Sam Routledge, who agreed that the writing was on the wall for the relationship, said that the move was on the whole beneficial to EMC resellers.

"It levels the playing field a little bit because you don't have that OEM - reseller relationship, which is confusing for the channel and I think also for customers," he said.

"Dell will continue to lead with EqualLogic, and it will be up to EMC to compete with that," he added.
