Notebooks fend off netbook challenge

Simon Quicke

Notebooks ended the year with strong sales demonstrating there is more to portable technology than tablets and netbooks.

According to the latest Q4 figures from GfK retail notebook sales grew by 12% in value and 5% in volume year-on-year, which was equivalent to an additional 70,000 units being sold into the UK market.

The analyst house noted that those numbers have been delivered despite strong competition from other form factors and the absence of a compelling upgrade story, which Windows 7 provided last year.

"This growth proves that despite distractions of new products such as tablets and the difficulties brought by the snow, the UK consumer remains committed to the notebook as their chosen main computing device," said Christopher Kennedy-Sloane, GfK IT account manager.
