Atos Origin calls time on email

Simon Quicke

Those resellers struggling to cope under the weight of emails might be intrigued by the ambition of Atos Origin's CEO to eradicate the technology inside his firm over the next three years.

Thierry Breton, CEO and chairman at the services firm, has made the announcement that it will use social media and collaboration tools instead of email in order to cope with the time it takes to deal with data.

According to figures provided by Atos Origin corporate users receive 200 mails per day of which 18% is spam and middle managers spend a quarter of their time searching for information.

The ramifications for the traditional email industry could be fairly interesting with Atos Origin making the move to cut down on the hours its staff spend trawling messages.

"We are producing data on a massive scale that is fast polluting our working environments and also encroaching into our personal lives," said Breton.

"The volume of emails we send and receive is unsustainable for business. Managers spend between 5 and 20 hours a week reading and writing emails," he added that social media tools were already being widely used and, "Businesses need to do more of this - email is on the way out as the best way to run a company and do business."
