BT names new Openreach head

BT has named its group director of strategy and regulatory affairs, Olivia Garfield, to chief executive at its critical 'last mile' Openreach division.

Garfield replaces Steve Robertson, who has held the post since Openreach's launch six years ago, and is now leaving to pursue new opportunities.

The Openreach unit, which operates with a certain degree of independence from its parent, is designed to ensure that all comms providers are given open and equivalent access to the BT network, but it has come in for criticism from rivals who claim it favours BT.

Garfield will not only have to deal with the frequent complaints levelled at Openreach, but will also be in charge of delivering BT's ambitious plans to deploy super-fast broadband.

Garfield stressed her commitment to the broadband roll-out, saying: "Fibre broadband is the future and I am determined to make it available to as many homes and businesses as possible via a wide range of providers."

BT Retail strategy director Sean Williams is to step up to fill Garfield's old position, BT said.
