Online retailer Play.com hit by security breach

Simon Quicke

Online retailer Play.com has informed customers that it has been victim of a security breach but moved quickly to assure customers that no credit card information has been compromised.

Just days after the RSA server breach data security is again in the spotlight with Play.com having to admit that a marketing firm it uses has become victim of an attack and as a result some of its customer details might have been exposed.

An email from the eretailer's customer service team this morning went out spelling out the potential problems:
"We are emailing all our customers to let you know that a company that handles part of our marketing communications has had a security breach. Unfortunately this has meant that some customer names and email addresses may have been compromised."

"We take privacy and security very seriously and ensure all sensitive customer data is protected.  Please be assured this issue has occurred outside of Play.com and no other personal customer information has been involved," the email added.

The advice given by the retailer was for users to be vigilant with email and password information and not to click on any links on suspicious email that might be sent to them.
