Companies buying into the unified communications market are overwhelmingly picking a multi-vendor best-of-breed approach to their networks, according to research carried out by Mitel to mark the launch of its new 'Freedom' architecture.

The survey, which quizzed a worldwide sample of IT professionals, suggested that 75% believed that a best-of-breed approach would deliver a stronger return on investment than being limited to a single vendor.

"We've always been passionate about enabling organisations to break free from the walled garden venor model. Allowing organisations to tailor their own networks should be a given, and this will become more important as the 'bring your own device' trend becomes more prevalent," remarked Mitel's Graham Bevington, EMEA MD.

Over 50% of those quizzed by Mitel, which now bills itself as a UC software outfit, said that mobile phones, and smartphones in particular, would become the dominant means of communicating at work.

Most respondents also predicted that their organisations would move to a 'bring your own device' strategy in the future.

"Organisations should be establishing their UC strategies now in order to prepare for new ways of working. Such shifts in working practices can be simple and securely accommodated," said Bevington.
