Now is the time that tablets should be introduced to firms if they want to get one step ahead of the competition.
Amalyst powerhouse Gartner has issued a call for CIOs to start experimenting now with tablets to see how they can use them in their business in order to get a competitive edge over rivals.
Despite some detractors viewing the iPad and its ilk as expensive toys and consumer aimed products that have little place in the boardroom the expected rise of consumerisation is predicted to have a serious impact on businesses.
Gartner has added its voice to many others that have predicted the rise of consumerisation and the bring your own device to work as one that is unstoppable.
"CIOs are determined not to make the same mistakes they made with smart phones, which were often written off early as expensive and frivolous toys, or executive status symbols," said David Willis, research vice president at Gartner.
"If you can think of an application for tablets, your competition may well be thinking in the same way -- and acting on it. It is time to explore the use of media tablets in business," he added.
Gartner is predicting that there will be 69m tablets shipped this year and it is not alone in chalking up large numbers with IDC yesterday predicting that sales will rise threefold in 2011 compared to 2010.
"The iPad, and the larger wave of media tablets, has captured the imagination of business leaders. Some companies have issued them to business and IT leaders in the spirit of exploration," said Willis.
"Sales leaders are clamoring to adopt media tablets with their sales teams, as a more engaging way to share sales collateral and promotional materials. And it won't stop there," he added.
