Netgear signs ex-Juniper channel boss in midmarket push

Former Juniper partner boss Jonathan Hallatt has joined Netgear as VAR sales director with a brief to increase its exposure to larger-scale installations and a view to challenging some of its larger rivals.

The vendor, traditionally cast in the role of a consumer and SOHO network provider, has bet big on adding areas such as storage and security to its core networking proposition and is seeking to chase more business in the midmarket.

"Netgear has grown revenues in these areas in an impressive way, and my job will be to go to some of the larger channel partners and introduce the end-to-end coverage we can now bring around wireless, networking and storage," Hallatt told MicroScope.

Netgear is talking up its lower cost solutions as a viable alternative to the likes of Cisco, and even Juniper, in the face of government cuts to the public sector and ever-present concerns over the strength of the economic recovery.

"There are a huge number of businesses in the midmarket, and although the big guys are going to go after that there's more than enough for everybody," said Hallatt.

"We'd certainly like to go into some of the larger midmarket customers; it's where we can play to our strengths and I'm confident we can do it," he added.

Meanwhile, industry talk suggests that Hallatt's former employers have secured the services of former HP Networking head Darryl Brick, who stepped down last October, although this was unconfirmed at the time of writing.
