Chinese communications firm Huawei is to hire up to 500 staff in the UK over the next three years, effectively doubling its current headcount.

Basingstoke-based Huawei said it also hopes to create up to 1,500 further sub-contractor roles during the period, and is also planning to set up a graduate recruitment scheme.

"We are committed to bringing more job opportunities to the UK which is a key market for us," said Victor Zhang, chief executive of Huawei UK.

"An increase in employees in our UK office will help us to provide more customised and innovative products and solutions for British telecom carriers, enterprise customers and consumers," said Zhang.

The new roles are expected to be largely in sales, management and engineering.

Huawei said it had taken the decision to bolster its headcount on the back of recent success in its network infrastructure business.
