The opportunity for security resellers to educate users around the risks of failing to protect their data appears to be as high as ever.

Corporate security polices are increasingly coming under strain as staff embrace social networks and flexible working, which have both been identified by major vendors as two of the most prevalent sources of threats to the network.

Despite the warnings from the industry many firms are failing to give staff the required direction over security handing a golden opportunity to resellers to plug the knowledge gap.

Findings from Guidance Software found 64% of employees noting are given no instructions over IT security in the workplace and as a result are having to work out for themselves the best way to protect their data.

Frank Coggrave vice president of EMEA sales at Guidance Software, said that it was wrong for the burden of protecting themselves to fall on the staff.

"A large proportion of workers clearly believe they play an important role in protecting against malware attacks and keeping data secure and half understand the risks associated with devices, however, the majority are not being adequately trained," he said.

"We know that hackers and criminals are becoming more effective at evading traditional security measures, so everyone needs to be informed, observant and vigilant," he added.
