RM unveils former Dell executive as chairman

Education specialist RM has announced a shuffling of its senior management just days before its current chairman retires.

With current chairman John Leighfield retiring next Wednesday after 17 years of service the vendor has announced the former chairman of Microgen Martyn Ratcliffe is stepping into the role.

Ratcliffe's appointment comes at an interesting point for RM with the firm recently revealing in its half yearly numbers a pre-tax loss of £1.4m for the six months ended 31 March blaming the impact of public sector cuts for tough trading conditions both in the UK and US.

Those challenging market conditions are set to remain for the rest of RM's fiscal year as the current public sector cuts continue to filter through to schools and local education authorities.

Ratcliffe has a track record of delivering results at both Microgen and in his role for the last year as the chairman of the Sagentia Group and RM will be looking for him to tackle the current tough conditions it faces. His CV also includes some time as a senior vice president at Dell responsible for EMEA.

Terry Sweeney, chief executive of RM, highlighted Ratcliffe's experience as being key in the current situation: "Martyn's track record at Microgen and his international experience at Dell will be invaluable to RM as we continue to develop the business."
