RIM talks up progress with subscriber numbers tweet

Blackberry maker Research in Motion (RIM) has had a difficult few months with its share price taking a dip and critics arguing it trailing Apple in the tablet stakes but it has been gaining customers.

In a rare moment of numerical candor RIM posted an update on Twitter announcing that it had added one million subscribers across EMEA in the last three weeks.

"BlackBerry continues momentum across EMEA with 1 Million+ new subscribers added in less than 3 weeks," stated the vendor on a tweet.

The vendor used to provide subscription numbers fairly regularly until late last year but in the light of the competition it is facing from both Apple and Google's Android OS based phones the number should have a positive impact on the share price.

Last month, RIM embarked on a drastic cost-cutting drive that will see undisclosed numbers of redundancies across the firm, and the "reallocation of resources to areas that offer highest growth opportunities" after turning in a poor performance in the first quarter of its fiscal 2012.

The firm posted sales of $4.9bn (£3bn), down 12 per cent on the prior quarter and up 16 per cent year-on-year.

Operating profit tumbled 15 per cent year-on-year, and net income of $695m was down nine per cent on the year-ago quarter, missing analyst targets, as it came under increasing pressure from both Apple's iPhone and the growing stable of Android devices.
