Security patches cause downtime for UK businesses

A survey conducted by systems management vendor Dell KACE has found that UK firms are clamouring for greater automation around security patch deployment processes, with 53% saying they had been affected by downtime when deploying patches, while 29% complained of cost impacts from forcing their IT teams to patch out of hours.

The biggest pain point around security patching was found to be the frequency of updates, cited by 44% of 276 UK IT decision makers, while 39% saw difficulties supporting remote users and 38% said time to deploy was their largest issue.

Just under 40% of respondents said they wanted to see greater automation around patch deployment, while 20% wanted to see security firms allow more time for testing; only 6% of respondents said they spent more than four hours testing per patch, and 16% didn't bother at all.

"Patching takes up a lot of time for businesses of all sizes, and they are keen to look at ways that they can reduce this burden on their IT teams," said Dell KACE EMEA sales director Seann Gardiner.

"Taking the right systems management approach can help streamline the process of getting patches out to end-user machines, giving IT more time to concentrate on value-generating activities for the business," he added.
