Huawei looks to cloud and tablets to grow business

Comms specialist Huawei has talked up its ambitions to deliver products well beyond its traditional networking expertise highlighting cloud as one of the areas it plans to expand into along with tablets and other devices.

The aim of transforming into "an integrated ICT solutions vendor" is one that the Chinese vendor has started working towards and in its latest set of results, for the first half of 2011, it was able to update the market on the progress.

Cathy Meng, CFO at Huawei, said that the first half, which produced an 11% year-on-year increase in revenue to 98.3bn CNY with operating profits hitting 12.4bn CNY, had met expectations.

"Although the global economy continues to face uncertainty, we remain confident in achieving our annual sales target of 199bn CNY with our device and enterprise businesses as new growth drivers," she added.

Earlier this year the vendor set up its enterprise business operations centre which was tasked with showcasing the extent to which the firm could offer a wider range of IT needs and it has pushed that concept out to 100 countries and targeted various verticals including the public sector, finance and the utility sector.

The vendor also introduced cloud platforms specifically designed for the media and health industries with ambitions to encourage the development of more solutions taking advantage of its cloud smart phone and its Android-based Media Pad.
