With expectations of a fire-sale starting in earnest last night Dixons was the first to light the blue touch paper, kicking off a sale at 6pm and selling out of its online stock within five minutes.

Retailers cut prices to £89 for a 16GB model and £115 for a 32GB model, down from £349 and £429 respectivel,y in order to shift their TouchPad stocks

Dixons was followed by Best Buy, which has been selling the tablets for $99 all weekend in the US, and it too sold out quickly before Carphone Warehouse joined the fray with its server falling over a couple of time under the bombardment of customer orders.

Other retailers including John Lewis have followed suit but the TouchPad can still be found for the original prices at some online players including Amazon.
