Cisco has paid out an undisclosed sum to acquire privately-held business collaboration start-up Versly, a California based firm that specialises in enabling more effective content collaboration within Microsoft's Office suite, a potential 600 million strong market that Cisco is keen to tap into.

The firm has made collaboration technology, estimated to be worth $45bn according to Cisco - one of its five technologies, and said the acquisition of Versly would provide "more opportunity for Cisco partners to provide enhanced collaboration solutions to customers."

"With this acquisition we're enhancing our collaboration offerings and improving the user experience by integrating social technologies within the business applications individuals and teams use at work," said Murali Sitaram, vice president and general manager, Collaboration Software Group (CSG), Cisco.

Cisco plans to integrate Versly's software into a number of its collaboration offerings, including Quad, Jabber and WebEx.
