The option of spinning off rather than selling the PC division seems to be the one gaining ground within Hewlett-Packard as the hardware giant looks to restructure its business.

The idea that the Personal Systems Group (PSG) could be sold off was first raised when the CEO Leo Apotheker outlined his vision for the future, which involved withdrawing from the tablet market and reviewing its involvement in PCs.

That then led to a rash of headlines stating that the vendor would sell-off its PC operation, which was refuted by the UK head of PSG Paul Hunter last week.

According to reports the scenario that is more likely to emerge is a spin-off with the PC operation being established as a separate company. But even if a spin-off gets the green light it could take a year to eighteen months for that to be put into action.
