Wireless kit sales boosted by corporate mobility growth

Booming sales of mobile devices have lead to year-on-year growth of 35% in enterprise wireless LAN (WLAN) sales, as Wi-Fi coverage in both public and private spaces becomes a must-have service, according to analysts at Canalys.

The worldwide market, which includes sales of both access points and controllers, was worth $757m (£474m) during the second calendar quarter of 2011, with 1.6 million units shipped.

Canalys' Alex Smith warned that expanding sales of wireless-only devices such as iPads would make building and maintaining an appropriate WLAN environment even more important in the future.

"Without a suitable WLAN strategy a business will soon find its existing network deployments overwhelmed," said Smith.

"As consumers boost both public cloud investment and mobile device adoption in the tnerprise, the real winners will be WLAN vendors capable of steering government and business organisations to the right networking environment," he added.

The shift to the 802.11n standard, which supports a higher density of devices, also contributed to growth as signs of a corporate refresh cycle began to emerge.

Broken out by vendor, Cisco led the market in Q2, with shipment sales up 35.6% year-on-year and 53.6% of the market locked down. Second-placed Aruba Networks grabbed 14.6% of the market after posting growth of 41.5%, while Motorola Solutions came in third.

The top five was rounded out by HP Networks and Meru.
