BT is launching a new leasing scheme through its BT Local Business arm, offering start-ups up to £15,000 worth of ICT kit to get them off the ground.

The telco intends for the plan, which will be open to any firm trading for under three years, to help small businesses dodge reliance on bank loans or overdrafts during their infancy.

BT said that the scheme, which will cover a range of kit options from telephony solutions through software licencing and laptops, has been developed specifically to deliver higher acceptance levels for new-start companies that have not yet build themselves a credit rating.

BT Business general manager of finance, Declan McGlone, said the UK had an average of 270,000 business start-ups per annum.

"In light of the current economic climate we want to help these businesses access the products and services they need to get their venture up and running. Our Kickstart Scheme offers finance over a fixed term at a fixed rate, making it easier for customers to budget," he said.

BCC business development head Karina Knudsen backed BT's scheme, saying it had "long called for more support for small businesses."

The scheme will be run in conjunction with Shire Leasing.
